The collection, 1910, 2002, and undated, consists mostly of Dain's materials relating to the Children of the Chippewa, Ottawa, and Potawatomi versus the Regents of the University of Michigan trial, 1971-1980; his research papers and drafts; materials for county or city events he collected or helped create; papers of students; biographical materials; and some miscellaneous maps (copies). Other materials relating to the trial may be found in the Elmer White papers and cataloged materials. Papers by students include: History of events culminating inthe removal of the Nottawa-Sippe band of Potawatomi Indians, by John M. Leatherbury, 1977; History of Isabella County, by Mrs. Stephen Potter, 1910, and New York to Michigan : the all water route of the 1840s, by James D. Gries, 1974; and Vernon Township Records, 1941-1942, by Harriet E. Morton, ca. 1942?

L.F. Seymour of Farwell (Mich.) won the bid to construct a gravel road, located mostly in Ionia County and a bit of Kent County (Mich.). Seymour and Frank F. Rogers, the then State Highway Commissioner, signed the contract on Oct. 1, 1920. Seymour later sued for $10,663.21, his unpaid balance. He was eventually paid. Dain was born Nov. 20, 1910. He earned an A.B. and a M.A., both in history and both from Wayne State University (WSU). During World War II he served as a communications officer in the U.S. Navy. Dain taught in Detroit Public Schools for 29 years and as a special instructor at WSU for 15 years.
